The little girl wanted to be a mermaid when she grew up
The other girls would laugh
and say she never could.
The little girl stomped her feet,
stuck out her tongue
and scream that yes she would!
She loved the mermaid's sweet voice and long wavy hair
She loved her beautiful smile and iridescent scales
But most of all she loved how she swam in the water
with her magnificent shimmery tail.
Every night she'd tell the ocean what she wanted to be when she grew up
The ocean would come onto the shore and kiss her toes and leave.
She knew in her innocent child"s heart
All she had to do was believe.
One night as she sat on a rock to talk to the ocean
A ritual she did every day
A huge random wave swept over
The rock on which she sat, cradled her in its salty arms
and quickly took her away.
